Church Membership
Joining the covenant community of Bend Southern Baptist Church
Membership at Bend Southern Baptist Church is a serious and joyful commitment, a covenant between the Lord, the congregation, and you. We believe the local church is God's primary instrument for discipleship, worship, and mission! We invite you to become a formal part of our body.
What Is Church Membership?
Church membership is a public and meaningful commitment to belong to a particular local congregation under the authority of Christ. It identifies those who have professed faith in Christ and willingly commit themselves to worship, serve, grow, and walk together with a specific body of believers. Membership is more than attending services or associating with a church; it is a covenantal relationship in which believers identify themselves with a local church and accept the responsibilities that come with belonging to it.
Why Is Church Membership Beneficial and Necessary?
Church membership provides a defined community in which believers can be known, loved, shepherded, encouraged, and held accountable. It gives pastors and elders a recognized flock to care for and gives members a committed family with whom they can worship, serve, bear burdens, pursue holiness, and persevere in the faith. Membership also provides a framework for meaningful pastoral oversight, mutual accountability, church discipline, and restoration when necessary. Without a recognizable commitment to a local body, these responsibilities become difficult to define and faithfully practice. Therefore, church membership is not merely an administrative practice or a church tradition; it expresses the nature of Christian community itself—a people who have committed themselves to Christ and, under His authority, to one another.
